Where Does The Information Collected in a Tell-a-Friend Script Go?

Author: Stu McLaren

Q: When you use the tell-a-friend and you put it in on your page as with the name and the email, does that go into your database and then the message gets sent from you or does that just go out to the internet and it gets sent out to people and it is up for them to respond?

Typically how a tell-a-friend script works is this. Somebody comes to your page and they are given the opportunity to submit names and email addresses of usually up to five or however many friends you determine. What happens there is the email is sent to those people but those names and emails do not get sent to your database.

What has to happen is in that email that is sent to those people is a call to action, meaning something to be effect of, my friend recommended or I just came across with this link today, I recommend that you go check it out, click here.

When the person clicks there, it takes them to some type of an opt-in form that you have. So it does not automatically add those people to your database because that gets a spam log so we would not want to do that at all. What happens though is the email is sent to those people and there is a call to action. The call to action is click on some type of a link that leads that to an opt-in page.
