Segmenting Lists Within 1ShoppingCartOnline

Author: Stu McLaren

Q:  My question is when people opt in for our teleseminars we get their first name and email address.  Then they all go into our 1ShoppingCartOnline database.  We have two pretty distinct target markets but sometimes even in the same opt-in, we get people from both markets opting in. How can we know which market they belong in so we can segment it?

When you are creating different opt-in forms, you are essentially creating different autoresponder sequences.  So you can see at a glance who belongs to what based on what autoresponder sequence they have register for.

A good example, when I was doing a whole lot of teleseminars, I was doing teleseminars on multiple topics.  So I wanted to build sub list of people who are interested in those particular topics.  So the way I did it was I created an autoresponder sequence just for a particular teleseminar that I was doing on topic A.  And then I created an autoresponder sequence just for people who are interested in registering for teleseminar on topic B and then C, and D.  So I had multiple autoresponder sequences.

So they could potentially belong to all of them but it also gave me a way to market just to people who are interested in topic A, just to people who are interested in topic B and so forth.  So inside 1ShoppingCartOnline it is already built in there for you.  It is just a matter of creating separate autoresponder sequences that you are then driving people to.  Does that make sense?

Now if you have people from your two main markets opting into the same you probably will not know what market they are from unless you are directing that traffic to a specific location where they would be opting in just for. Perhaps before the optin for you could create a page saying, “If you are from Market A click here and if you are from  Market B click here”.

The other way to do it if everybody is going into the same autoresponder sequence is send an email to the whole list. It would say something to the effect of, “If you are Market A and you would like to find out know more about bla bla bla then click here.”  That takes them to another opt-in page where they would opt in for more information for Market A. You could do the same thing with market B. Then you would be able to build sub lists from there.
