My List is Getting Autoresponder Messages Too Late

Author: Stu McLaren

Q: I have a question about autoresponders and teleseminars. If you are holding a teleseminar what delay and how many messages should I put into my sequence? For people signing up a couple of days before the event, they may not get all the information I want them to. Is there any way around this? I also don’t want them getting messages about the event after the actual event.

Well with autoresponders, my typical plan of action is to have an autoresponder message that goes out on day zero which you already that will give them the information about the call. You want to give them where to dial in, what number to call, what pin code, the time, the date and all the rest of that kind of information.

Now, as far as additional messages, I typically do not have additional messages prior to the time of my teleseminar because of that very reason that you are pointing out.

If people sign up two days prior to my event and I have got four days worth of messages, then they are going to get messages after they have already listened to the event. Due to this reason, I typically do not have more than one message in my autoresponder list prior to the actual call.

I may send out a broadcast message the day of the call a couple hours prior as a reminder. If the teleseminar or event is a while away I might send out a broadcast (not an autoresponder message) every couple days just as reminders as well.

Just after the call I go in and I change my autoresponder messages. I change the first one so it doesn’t give them the dial in information, the pin code, the time and the date and all that anymore. Instead I give them the replay page and then I add the additional messages afterwards because it does not matter at that point when they come into the sequence.

You can use your autoresponder system now to promote not only the teleseminar again and encourage them to listen to the replay but you can also use it to promote other products.

So in summary, my plan of action prior to the teleseminar itself, I do not have more than one message in the autoresponder sequence. I then change it after the actual calls to promote the replay and I add additional messages thereafter.

Now to keep reminders and to keep people posted and make sure that your teleseminar is top of mind for them prior to the call, I would send out broadcast emails. That way it does not matter when they have signed up because if they have registered there are going to be an autoresponder sequence so you got that list of names and when you send out a broadcast email, it goes out to all of those people all at the same time.
