How Should I Structure My Websites?

Author: Stu McLaren

Q: I have a company with a lot of different products as well as different divisions. How many websites should I have and how should I structure them? Where should I start?

There are different types of websites and it is important to understand what types there are and the purpose of each. I generally like to have one place to go where somebody can find out pretty much everything they need to know about the company, myself, the products and services, and it just gives an overall view of what we are doing. That is what I would call your promotional site or your main site if you will.

A lot of people also call it like a brochure site because you are not specifically selling anything or you may but the purpose of it is really more just to give people information about who you are and what you do. The other types of sites that you have would be direct response sales letter type sites. It is not focused on selling all your products. It is only focused on selling one product and that is a sales letter and that has a purpose because you want to drive prospects there or people who are interested in what you are selling to that particular page.

Then you have different like hybrids of what we are talking about. Some are like opt-in pages which the purpose of the opt-in page is to help you build your email list. Then you got an Ask Campaign, and the purpose of these Ask pages are to help you build a database of questions from people in your particular marketplace.

The question really comes down to what site you start with. My advice would be to start with a WordPress blog. WordPress blogs are very easy for people to use and manage and it gives you the opportunity to build it out as much as you want. If you have got a lot of different content, WordPress is just a dream tool for people getting started and once you got it set up, you are going to feel like a webmaster. It is that easy.
